Vaginal Relaxation: Frustrating but Treatable Condition

Vaginal Relaxation: Frustrating but Treatable Condition

Vaginal relaxation is a frustrating condition that can be caused by childbirth, obesity, or aging. Changes in the muscles and tissues in this area can cause varying degrees of laxity as the pelvic organs begin to sag, often leading to pelvic relaxation.

Fortunately, there are treatments available in Clínica del Carmen to help you combat symptoms related to vaginal relaxation. Discover our laser treatment for vaginal relaxation.

Who does vaginal relaxation affect?

Vaginal relaxation affects a high percentage of middle-aged women in Spain, many of whom have difficulty controlling urination. This condition is often the result of childbirth and aging and, in many cases, a combination of both.

However, the weakening of muscles and tissues can occur in women who have never had children. For these women, causes of vaginal relaxation may include:

  • Obesity
  • Hereditary weakness of supporting tissues.
  • Tension in the supporting tissues caused by chronic cough.
  • Sudden increases in abdominal pressure.

What are the symptoms of vaginal relaxation?

Patients suffering from vaginal relaxation often complain of a feeling of heaviness or fullness in the pelvic region. It is also common for women with this condition to leak urine, in small to moderate amounts, when laughing, running, coughing, or doing other physical activities.

How is vaginal relaxation diagnosed?

The medical diagnosis of vaginal and pelvic relaxation involves a history and physical examination. Additional tests may include urodynamic studies (for bladder and urethral function), urethrocystoscopy, as well as x-rays of the urinary system. Talk to one of our specialists at your annual check-up consultation, if you suspect that you suffer from vaginal relaxation.

What is the cause of vaginal relaxation?

In a healthy young woman, the vagina is a firm, muscular canal. The tissues are elastic and a mucosal lining provides lubrication. The labia, folds of skin at the entrance to the vagina, provide protection for the sensitive external female genitalia of the vulva. A network of muscles called the pelvic floor supports the vaginal tissues, as well as the bladder and intestines, keeping these organs in the proper position.

Collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are major components of all skin and muscle tissues in the body. These elements keep the tissues thick and firm, elastic and hydrated. However, as we age, production slows down, below the level of daily depletion, especially during and after menopause. This manifests itself on the face in thin and lax skin.

The vaginal area is affected in the same way. The lips widen and sink. They can be visible when tight-fitting clothing is worn or rubbed uncomfortably during sex or exercise. The vagina loosens, creating loss of sensation for both sexual partners. Lubrication decreases, further increasing discomfort. As the muscles weaken, the bladder descends, causing urinary urgency or leakage.

Pregnancy and vaginal delivery put enormous pressure on a woman's body, accelerating these changes. Even a young woman who has had a large baby, multiple births, or a forceps delivery can experience vaginal atrophy or stress urinary incontinence.

How can it be treated?

At Clínica del Carmen our patients can enjoy vaginal rejuvenation without surgery. Gynelaser is a minimally invasive laser therapy, which has multiple advantages:

  • Delivers focused light energy deep into the vaginal tissues.
  • It activates the immediate contraction of collagen, tightening the vagina and the skin of the lips.
  • The body responds to the heat generated by the laser with increased production of new collagen for continued improvement.
  • Treatment can also improve natural lubrication.
  • It can increase sexual confidence and satisfaction for the patient and their partner.
  • It tightens the pelvic floor muscles and improves the support structures for the bladder.
